Renault Otsu

<Developed from 1925 through 1928 in France as an upgraded modification of the Renault FT. The modernization project was finished and the vehicle saw mass production. In 1929, a total of 10 vehicles were purchased by Japan and were designated the Otsu-Gata Sensha (Tank B Model). The Japanese vehicles were slightly modernized and were widely used both in action and for training purposes.

Upgrades from-Nothing Renault Otsu Upgrades into-Chi-Ni,Ha-Go

The Renault Otsu is the first Japanese tank of the Tech Tree. It is a light tank.

Characteristics[]

The Renault Otsu is different from the other Renaults in one way. It's armor is quite thick, thicker than most Tier 2s even. The gun selection is simplistic, from a machine to an upgraded cannon, the Otsu can only be unique with its armor.

Combat[]

The Otsu is rather slow due to the heavy armor. But that armor saves it from autocannons and protects it from normal cannons if angled correctly. The guns won't make quick work of other tanks, but protects it well enough to fight back. It is definitely a front line tank, and can perform well if used correctly.

Pros and Cons[]

Pros[]

  • Frontal armour is 30 mm thick, good enough to stop some fire.
  • The tank is quite nimble despite the 23 km/h speed limit.
  • The gun dishes out some serious damage per shot.
  • Thickest armor of all the Tier 1 tanks (with the exception of the Soviet T-62A Sport which can only be used in Soccer mode).
  • Amazing gun depression

Cons[]

  • Low top speed makes it harder to respond to changes in the battlefield quickly.
  • The top 37 mm gun has poor rate of fire and penetration, even by tier one standards.
  • Poor turret traverse speed.
  • The large driver's hatch at the front of the tank can be easily penetrated, due to the armor in that area being neither thick nor angled enough to bounce most shots.

Performance[]

The Renault Otsu is the Japanese version of the Renault FT French light tank. As such, the Otsu shares the Renault FT series' sluggish top speed. This makes the Otsu slower to react to changing battlefield conditions. However, it is surprisingly nimble and easy to turn, owing to its 36 degree traverse speed fully upgraded.

The tank also boasts quite a lot of armour for a tier 1 tank, with 30 mm of armour at the front. This allows you to bounce quite a number of enemy tank's guns. Do not fool yourself into thinking that the Otsu can bounce everything, ]as even at tier 1 there are guns that can penetrate your armour.

The top gun on the Otsu is quite inaccurate, even by tier 1 standards. It boasts quite heavy damage to compensate, but is marred by its slow rate of fire of 17 rounds per minute, beaten only by the Medium Mk. I's QF 6-pdr gun. It also has the lowest penetrating elite gun of any of the tier one tanks.

Overall, the Renault Otsu is designed for close-range combat. The Otsu's penetration is suitable for close-range engagements, where the 0.5 /100 m accuracy does not matter much. Use the terrain for cover while you reload, and punish enemy tanks that try to take you out.

Historical Information[]

NC27

The Renault NC1, NC27 prototype

Louis Renault had obtained an order in 1923 to build two new prototypes as a parallel modification project, with the factory designation Renault NC; it was intended to feature not only an improved suspension system but also a stronger engine. It was produced as a modernized version of the French Renault FT. Like "FT", "NC" is a combination of code letters devoid of any meaning. One prototype happened to be finished second, in December 1925, and was therefore called the NC2. It was fitted with a modified Kégresse leaf spring suspension and a 62 hp engine. It had as an alternative designation Renault Modèle 24/25, because Renault proposed to build it as a possible "fast tank" as specified in Plan 1924 of the French Cavalry. After the modernization project was finished, the vehicle came into mass production. The Japanese variants were lightly modernized and were used often for training purposes. This line of development was discontinued however. The first prototype to be ready, thus named the NC1, had a different suspension system, with twelve wheels and three large vertical volute springs per side. It allowed for a top speed of 18.5 km/h, making it in 1926 the fastest French tank ever developed.
